The Department of Chemistry is a prestigious postgraduate and research department of the college, established in 1978. The department offers undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and research programmes (Ph.D.) in Chemistry. Starting this year, Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) will be implemented and the department offers 3 year Degree, 4 year Honours Degree, and 4 year Honours with Research Degree in Chemistry. Discipline Specific Core (DSC) courses of Department covers basic, advanced and interdisciplinary topics in Chemistry.

Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) courses offered by the department are Chemistry for Renewable and Clean Energy, Chemistry of Nanomaterials, and Research Methodology and Ethics. The Value Added Courses (VAC) provided by the department comprise Laboratory Safety, Sustainable Chemistry, and Scientific Communication and Ethics. Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) available are Practical Skills in Chemistry, Analytical Skills, and Computers in Chemical Science. Multidisciplinary Courses (MDC) offered to students from other majors include Fundamental Aspects of Environmental Chemistry and Food Chemistry.

The department currently has nine permanent faculty members, seven of whom are approved research guides under the University of Kerala. Certificate courses are also offered to enhance skill development and employability. The department is supported by funding from various international, national, and state agencies such as RSC, UGC, DST, DBT, KSCSTE, and KSHEC. Separate laboratory facilities are provided for UG, PG, and research students. The infrastructure of the department has been expanded using DST-FIST funding, and it houses a UV-Vis Diffused Reflectance Spectrophotometer, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, FT-IR Spectrometer, Rotary Evaporator, Fume Hood, Photo Reactor, Microwave and Muffle Furnaces, Hydrothermal Reactors and Humidity Oven, among others. The centralized research facility is open to scholars from both the parent institution and other institutions. Additionally, the department has national and international collaborations, enabling high-standard research.
