The Department of English began functioning right from the inception of the institution in 1965, training the entire student community of the college in English language skills and soft skills. Over time, the department has grown as one of the largest departments in terms of programmes offered, student enrolment and faculty members. The department which began to offer B.A. Degree programme in English Language and Literature from 1992, was upgraded as a Post Graduate department in 1999. From 2012, the department is an approved research centre under the University of Kerala.
The department offers Certificate Courses in Translation Studies and Writing for Media. In addition to the courses taught at the graduate and postgraduate level as per the curriculum of the University of Kerala, the department conducts various co-curricular programmes for the holistic development of students, ranging from intellectually stimulating lecture series to literary and creative writing workshops to career-oriented sessions focusing on UGC-NET and entrance examinations conducted by the institutes of national importance.
Making use of the scholarship available within, such as faculty members and research scholars, and out at both national and international level, the department organizes on a regular basis Expert Talk Series, Faculty Talk Series, and Research Scholars’ Talk Series which in turn contribute to the overall academic ambience of the college, moulding research scholars, post graduate students and other advanced learners
The department comprises ten faculty members, including four Ph.D. holders who have research papers published in leading international journals and books, editorial experiences, pieces of creative writing like anthologies of poems and international seminar papers to their credit. Their areas of expertise range from creative writing to comparative literature to modern literary and cultural trends to media studies. The varied interests and talents also put them in the lead when it comes to interdepartmental co-curricular activities.
Under the FYUG Programme, the Department of English offers a diverse curriculum that includes BA in English (3 years), BA in English with specialization in Media Studies (3 years), BA Honours in English (4 years), and BA Honours in English with Research (4 years). The carefully selected Discipline Specific Core (DSC) and Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) courses encompass a wide array of subjects such as literary studies, cinema, media studies, cultural studies, and research methodologies. Additionally, the Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC), Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), and Value Addition Courses (VAC) are meticulously designed to refine students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, thereby enhancing their employability.
