CONSCIENTIA-2022, RESEARCH ORIENTATION AND STUDENTS ENRICHMENT PROGRAMM IN ASSOCIATION WITH IISER, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

The Department of Chemistry, T. K. M. College of Arts and Science, in association with IISER,Thiruvananthapuram organized a research oriented and student enrichment program on 4th July 2022 at seminar hall  T. K. M. College of Arts and Science. Eminent professors from IISER have given lectures in Inorganic, Organic and physical Chemistry.

NIPAM- IRP AWAENESS WEBINAR

The Department of Chemistry, T. K. M. College of Arts and Science, in association with KSCSTE-IPRICK have conducted a webinar (Webex platform) on IPR Awareness sessions on 24th June 2022 at 2.30 pm, as part of the National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM). The scheme launched by the Government of India aims to spread awareness on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), primarily among students, faculty and researchers and for providing a basic overview of Intellectual property rights (IPR) such as Patents, Designs, Trademarks, Copyright, GI etc., their filing procedures and their significance. The session was started with the opening remarks by Dr. Simimole H., Programm coordinator, followed with the lecture by resource person Sri, Sreedhar Panchumarthi, NIPAM trainer and Examiner of Patents & Designs at Patent Office, Chennai on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) which exposed the participants to the various IPRs such as Patents, Designs, Trademarks, Copyright, GI etc., their filing procedures and the significance of IPR in the research and commerce ecosystems. About 161 participants were joined in the meeting. The session was concluded with a quiz based on the topics covered and majority of the participants were actively participated. The programm was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr, Shehnaz S., Convener, IPR cell, T. K. M. College of Arts and Science Participation e-certificates from Govt. Of India has been issued to all registered participants.

LECTURE SERIES ON ‘CAREER GUIDANCE AND IPR’

The Department of Chemistry have organized Lecture Series on ‘Career Guidance and IPR’ with the first two lectures of the series on 27th November 2021 on the topics ‘Research Opportunities in Abroad’ and ‘Crafting an Effective Scientific Communication’. The academic sessions were started at 10.30 am with the welcome speech by Dr. Abdul Rahim. This was followed by the Presidential address by Dr. Siyad M A, HoD (Incharge). The programme message was delivered by Dr. Divesh Kumar. The programme was inaugurated by Gils Jose, St. Stephens College, Uzhavoor. He had stated the importance of knowing career opportunities abroad and cited the importance of learning the art of writing scientific content. The academic orientation session was started at 10.45 am with the first lecture by Dr. Kala Kannankutty, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan.

SCIENCE DAY LECTURE AND CAREER GUIDANCE

The National Science Day Lecture–2021 was conducted on 29th March 2021. The inaugural session of the programme was conducted at College seminar hall on 29th March 2021 and Dr. Manohar Mullasseri, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, Fathima College, Kollam inaugurated the function. He highlighted the need of students in science and the contributions of Indian scientists to world science and technology, particularly, Sir. CV Raman. The inaugural session concluded at 10.30 AM. Followed by the inaugural session, the meritorious students from the Chemistry Department of TKM College of Arts and Science were given special appreciation and awards by the Department Faculty Members. This was followed by the national science day-2021 lecture and career guidance lecture for chemistry students by Dr. Manohar Mullasseri. He detailed the opportunities in chemistry in India and discussed about the various funding agencies and scholarships for higher studies.

WEBINAR: EXPLORING THE DIMENSIONS OF QUALITY RESEARCH AND TEACHING (GNOSIS-2020)

The programme was organized as a part of the Chemistry Lecture Series by the Department of Chemistry in association with Internal Quality Assurance Cell.

The webinar was conducted on Wednesday, 23rd, September 2020 under the title ‘Exploring the Dimensions of Quality Research and Teaching’. The webinar notification and online registration forms were circulated in various academic social media groups. A total of 113 people registered for the programme. The webinar was conducted on Google Meet platform. The programme started with the welcome speech of Dr.Anas S., HoD, Department of Chemistry. The Presidential address was done by Dr Chithra Gopinath, Principal of T.K.M College of Arts & Science, Kollam. Ms,Sherifa Rahim, Webinar Coordinator (Faculty of Chemistry), introduced the resource person.

HAND SANITIZER PREPARATION AND DISTRIBUTION-II

The Department of Chemistry in association with the Mithra Cell have taken the task of preparing bulk quantities of hand sanitizers, for fighting against the Corona virus. The teachers of the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Chithra P G and Dr. Abdul Rahim M K were actively involved in this programme. The prepared hand sanitizers were handed over to the Chief warden of TKM College hostels. The sanitizers were also distributed to the local panchayath, police force and railway station.

HAND SANITIZER PREPARATION AND DISTRIBUTION-1

The research scholars and faculty members of the Department of Chemistry have taken an initiative of preparing sanitizers to the College, for preventing the Corona virus.  The research scholars have prepared the sanitizers on 16 March 2020. They explained different ways of preparing sanitizers from propanol and ethanol based formulations. Demonstration on the preparation of homemade sanitizers was also conducted. The Department HoD, Dr. S. Anas handed over the prepared sanitizers to the Principal, Dr. Smitha P G. and to the Office Superintendent Mrs. Shereefa Beevi. The sanitizers were distributed to the office, staffs and for the regular conduct of the exams.

NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS –2020

The National Science Day Celebrations–2020 was conducted on 28th February 2020. The inaugural session of the programme was conducted at College seminar hall on 28th February 2020 and Dr. Ratheesh K Vijayaraghavan, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Sciences, IISER Kolkatta was inaugurated the function. He highlighted the need of students in science and the contributions of Indian scientists to the world science and technology, particularly, Sir. CV Raman. Followed by the inaugural session, the national science day-2020 lecture was delivered by Dr. Ratheesh K Vijayaraghavan on the topic “Organic Memory Devices: How does it Work?”. He detailed about the different types of memories and the mechanism involved in the process. He motivated the students by inviting their attention to a few simple questions, but it worth lot. He also addressed the admission processes taking place various higher education institutions in India.

CHEMISTRY ASSOCIATION DAY CELEBRATIONS -VALENCY 2K20

The Chemistry Association Day –2019-20 was conducted on 24th February 2020. The association day function started at 10.00 am in the College seminar hall. The welcome speech was given by Dr. S. Anas, HoD, Dept. of Chemistry. The Principal, Dr. P.G. Smitha delivered the presidential address. The inaugural address was given by Prof. Aravind, SB College, Kottayam. The staff advisor Prof. E. Najeem, Teachers of the Department- Dr. Sumalekhsmy S. (IQAC Coordinator), Dr. Tharun A. Rauf (Programme Officer-NCC) and Mr. Sabari (College Chairman) gave the felicitation speeches. The vote of thanks was given by Mr. Maheen (Association Secretary). All the UG and PG students of the Department of Chemistry attended the function. After the inaugural function a scientific temperament speech was given by Prof. Aravind. The session was very useful for the entire students community. After the session, a multi-round Quiz programme on Science was conducted. Mr. Aswin, a final year UG student of the Department of Chemistry was the quiz master. Students from various colleges and other departments have attended the quiz programme. The prize was distributed to the winners at the end. The session was followed by students cultural programmes.

The Department of Chemistry has organized the Prime Minister Research Fellow (PMRF) lecture series for Post graduate and selected undergraduate students by PMRF Mr. Rinshad V. A, Research Scholar IISc Bangalore. He has given lectures on organometallic compounds.

THE ERUDITE –SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE PROGRAMME

 

The Department of Chemistry has organized the Erudite –Scholar in residence programme to provide the students in exploring the fresh areas of research and hence direct them to develop their research area in novel frontiers of science. Prof. Suresh C. Pillai, senior lecturer in nanotechnology, IT Sligo was the resource person. The scientific sessions, and interactive debates provided opportunities for the delegates to exchange new ideas and experiences, to create an environment for collaborative endeavors in emerging frontier interdisciplinary areas, to establish research relations and to find global partners for future collaboration.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT (ICEE 2K19)

 

T.K.M. College of Arts and Science hosted an International Conference on Energy

and Environment on 12th December 2019 – 14th December 2019. This international event was

organized by the Departments of Chemistry jointly with two other DST-FIST funded

departments of the college, Physics and Mathematics. The aim of the conference was to

provide a platform for researchers, faculties, engineers, academicians, technologists,

scientists, industrialists, environmentalists, and experts to showcase their novel research in

the field of Energy and Environment. The important thematic concerns of the conference

were Renewable Energy, Advanced Technologies, Advanced Functional Materials, Thin

Films, Fuels and Combustion and Sustainable Environment.

The conference started on 12th December 2019 with an inaugural session comprising of more than 1000 people from academic, research and

industrial fields. The welcome address was given by the College Principal, Dr. Smitha P G.

The Presidential address was delivered by the respected Chairman of the TKM group of

institutions, Jb. Dr. Shahal Hassan Musaliar. The conference theme was introduced by Prof.

Suresh C Pillai, Institute of Technology, Sligo, Ireland. The inaugural address was given by

Smt. J. Mercykutty Amma, Minister of Fisheries, Harbour Engineering and Cashew Industry,

Govt. of Kerala. Prof. Takeo Yamaguchi, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan gave the key-

note address. The abstract book was released by Dr. G.M. Anil Kumar, Noritake Company Limited, Japan. Professor Paula M Vilarinho from the University of Aveiro, Portugal accepted the abstracts. Dr. M. Haroon, TKM Trust Member, Professor Muhamed Hasbi Abd’

Rahim and Professor Rajan Jose from the University of Malasia, Professor Takanori Tamaki

from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan and Sri. M. Noushad MLA gave the

felicitation speeches.

The inaugural session of the programme was conducted at College seminar hall on 28th February 2019 at 10.00 AM and Dr. Deepa Janardhanan, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Central University, Kasargodu inaugurated the function.  Followed by the inaugural session, the meritorious students from the Chemistry Department of T. K. M. College of Arts and Science were given special appreciation and awards by the Department Faculty Members. This was followed by the national science day-2019 lecture and career opportunities in chemistry lecture for chemistry students by Dr.Deepa Janardhanan. She detailed the opportunities especially in pharmaceutical and computational chemistry in India and abroad and discussed about the various funding agencies and scholarships, mutual student exchange progamms etc

As part of the Science Promoting programme for high school students, conducted by Govt. of Kerala (Higher secondary Education), T. K. M. College hosted the programme Sasthra jaalakam. Dept of Chemistry participated in the event by providing resource person and laboratory hands on experimental sessions. Dr B Harikumar & Dr Chitra Gopinath were the resource        persons from the Department.

SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATION 2018

The National Science Day Lecture–2018 was conducted on 7th and 8th February 2018. The inaugural session of the programme was conducted at College seminar hall on 7th  February 2018 at 10.00 AM and  key note address was given by Dr. K. V. Jayachandran,
 Formerly Dean, Kerala university of Fisheries and Ocean studies.Dr K V Jayachandran delivered the talk on  
“Science and Technology for sustainable future ” and  Dr  J Udayakumar gave a lecture on  Innovation for sustainability on 8th february 2018.

SEPARATION TECHNIQUES IN CHEMISTRY

The Department of Chemistry, T. K. M. College of Arts and Science, conducted the 4th distinguished lecture on Separation Techniques in Chemistry as part of the Innovative Chemistry Lecture Series which is conducted regularly for the quality enhancement of teaching and research activities which create new opportunities for our academic fraternity to listen to established scientists with outstanding contributions in Science and Technology.

The inaugural session of the progamm was conducted at College Seminar Hall on 28th September 2017 at 10.30 am. The technical session was handled by Prof. Hassan Aboul Einien, National Research Centre, Cairo on the topic Separation Techniques.  He has given different methods of separation of organic compounds using capillary zone electrophoresis and other chromatographic techniques. The session was very informative to both undergraduate and Post graduate students.

The National Science Day Lecture–2017 was conducted during  21st -23rd  February 2017. The inaugural session of the programme was conducted at College seminar hall on 21st  February 2017 at 11.00 AM and a science quiz competition has been conducted. Dr. Premlett, Assistant Professor, T. K. M. College of Engineering, Kollam, delivered the lecture on Innovations in Science and Technology on 22nd Feb 2017. On 23rd Dr. Rejilan, Chairman, Research Academy for Creative Excellence delivered a lecture on Employability skills in modern day followed by a lecture by Dr. Rijo Thomas, Assistant Professor, T. K. M. College of Engineering, Kollam on the topic Science and Technology for Specially abled persons

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON “TROPICAL PLANTS & MOLECULAR DESIGN”

The Department of Chemistry, TKM College of Arts and Science, Kollam, Kerala organized a two day international conference on “Tropical Plants and Molecular Design” on February 14th and 15th 2017. The theme of the seminar was utilization of regional resources for value addition. Many eminent scientists from India and abroad has delivered lectures on the topic related to the title. The two day programme was inaugurated by the Hon. Minister, Adv. K. Raju and presided by Jb. Shahal Hasan Musaliar, Chairman, T. K. M. College Trust. The scientific session began with the Inaugural lecture by Dr. Ram Viswakarma, Director, IIIM, Jammu.  Dr. J. S. Yadav, IICT, delivered the key note address. More than 100 research scholars and faculty members participated in the conference. Selected participants were given an opportunity for giving oral presentations. The Royal Society of Chemistry sponsored the certificate of excellence for ‘best poster and oral presentations. Also Royal Society of Chemistry sponsored Prof. Keith Smith (Cardiff University) to participate in the seminar.

The symposium was an inspiration to the students and faculty for practicing science and realising the significance of the same

SCI VISION 2016- NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATION

Conducted a two day seminar, “SCI VISION 2017” in connection with National Science Day during February 22th and 23th 2016: Science Club Coordinator – Dr. Hari kumar B. Prof. M. N. Peethambaran delivered the lecture. A Quiz competition is also organized in association with the Science Day.

Visit of Nobel laureate- Prof. Ei-ichi Negishi

 

Nobel laureate- Prof. Ei-ichi Negishi visited T. K. M College of Arts and Science on 13th February 2016 and Dept of Chemistry organized the event. Prof. Negishi delivered lecture on his Nobel prize motivation work and interacted with the students and faculty from various institutes
