The Department of Botany was among the first departments of the college that offered an Undergraduate Degree (BSc. Botany) back in 1977. At present, the department offers major and minor courses in Botany. Students have the opportunity to complete their 3-year degree programme and 4-year honours programme in Plant Science. A botanical garden housing rare plants is maintained by the department. Advanced research facilities including mammalian cell culture lab and molecular biology lab developed utilizing DST-SERB project fund are among the unique features of the department. This state-of-the-art facility can be availed by students for project work. The faculty members of the department are approved guides for guiding research leading to PhD in Botany and Biotechnology with specialization in Phytopharmaceuticals, Actinomycete and Crop improvement and production. The department follows experiential mode of teaching and learning. Right from the inception, the department has succeeded in creating students with good academic progression. The students enrolling in the Department of Botany has an opportunity to get job training in Mushroom cultivation, budding, layering, grafting, flower arrangement and garden making.
