The DST-FIST-funded Post Graduate and Research Department of Physics is a leading research department in the college. Established in 1980, the department has been offering postgraduate courses since 1998. The University of Kerala recognized it as a research centre in 2013.
The department has seven permanent teaching faculty members, two of whom are research guides recognized by the University of Kerala. In total, the research centre has four recognized research guides. The department boasts a smart material lab equipped with devices such as XRD, a spin coating unit, and a dip coating unit. Additionally, it has a well-functioning computational physics lab, which is a key feature of the department. The major research areas include high-energy physics and nanoscience.
The Department of Physics offers a BSc in Physics (core), complementary courses for Chemistry and Mathematics, and an MSc in Physics. For CBCSS undergraduate students, the department offers an open course for other discipline students in Energy Physics.
Under the FYUGP programme, the department offers a 3-year degree, 4-year Honours degree with Research, a 4-year Honours degree, and a 3.5-year fast-track Honours degree. Students can choose between two distinct specialisations: Medical Physics and Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The VAC and MDC courses offered by the department are beneficial and interesting to both science and non-science students. These courses open up a wide range of job opportunities for students.
