Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry was established in 2001, offering an undergraduate programme in B.Sc. Biochemistry, and was later upgraded to a postgraduate department in 2013. Presently, our department offers the following academic programmes:  B.Sc. in Biochemistry (3 years), B.Sc. Honours in Biochemistry (4 years), B.Sc. Honours with Research in Biochemistry (4 years) and M.Sc. in Biochemistry (2 years). Our college is the only college under the University of Kerala offering B.Sc. Biochemistry Honours with Research. With over 140 members, our department includes six permanent faculty members, 2 lab assistants, more than 30 postgraduate students, and over 75 B.Sc. students. We also provide certificate courses in Nutrition and Food Safety, Lifestyle Disorders and Management, First Aid, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Water Quality Assessment and Management, and Fundamentals of Tissue Engineering. Our facilities include separate labs for B.Sc. and M.Sc. programmes and a specialized microbiology lab equipped with sophisticated instruments. These labs support a wide range of experiments in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Nanoscience, and Tissue engineering. Our department is proactive in fostering academic and personal growth through a series of lectures, workshops, and career guidance programs that address recent challenges and advancements in the field. To promote social values and responsibilities, we organize annual blood grouping and blood donation camps.

A notable achievement of our department is the consistent production of rank holders each year. Many of our students have also qualified CSIR-UGC NET/JRF, highlighting our academic excellence. We provide a nurturing environment conducive to knowledge acquisition, research, and personality development. The department can claim the expertise and service of highly qualified teachers/academicians who are actively involved in research in different areas of Biochemistry. The areas of research focus include Phytochemistry, Pharmacognosy, Antioxidant studies, Microbiology, Nanoscience, Enzymology, Toxicology, Molecular Biology and Tissue engineering.
