I. Blood Grouping and Blood Donation Campaign


    1. Objective of the Practice
    • To create a Blood Group Directory of the students of the college and promote blood donation drives.
    • Provide blood typing services to those who are not aware of their blood groups.
    2. Need Addressed and the Context
    In the contemporary medical scenario, scarcity of blood in the event of an emergency is a real crisis. This is largely owing to the misconception surrounding blood donation. Another obstacle is the fact that many people are not aware of their own blood group. The college holds intensive awareness campaigns to dispel the misgivings surrounding blood donation as well as informing the college and local community about the health benefits for blood donors. The blood donation drives organized by the college ensures the participation of the staff as well as students.
    3.The Practice
    In our college, the Department of Biochemistry organizes blood typing campaigns every academic year. In connection with this, an opportunity is provided for the staff and students of the college to test their blood group. The blood typing is handled by the faculty and students of the Biochemistry department. Blood donation camps are organized and blood is collected from students, teachers, non-teaching staffs as well as alumni members. The College works in association with Kerala State Aids Control Society, Kerala State Blood Transfusion Council and IMA in this regard. Each year at least three blood donation camps are organized and the blood typing data is consolidated into a Blood Group Directory at the college. Besides the regular blood donation drives, in emergency situations, local hospitals contact the NSS Programme Officer and thereby facilitating mobilization of student support for this purpose.
    4. Evidence of Success The initiative was well-received and met with appreciation from various medical organizations specifically local hospitals and blood banks. The blood group data of nearly 1500 students of the college were collected. The students were categorized according to their blood group and willingness of donation. This would be helpful for the society in the event of an emergency.
    5. Resources The required resources (financial or otherwise) to attain our targets are generated by the institution itself.

    II. Cleanliness Drives


    1. Objective of the Practice
    • To make the environment clean and free from contagious diseases.
    • To create cleanliness awareness among local population.
    • Timely intervention in the case of outbreak of any diseases.
    • Motivating the students to maintain right attitude with regard to environment preservation.
    2. Need Addressed and the Context
    The college is situated in a rural area with high population density. Health and hygiene risk factors are frequent. In most of the cases local inhabitants are unaware of the risk factors.
    3. The Practice
    The College, in association with NSS and NCC units, regularly monitor the risk factors in the neighbourhood of the college and address the imminent issues. The important activities are regular and periodical cleanliness drives, campaigns and awareness classes organized by this institution. In addition to cleaning the campus premises, the students also undertook the cleaning of Thankassery Port (Kollam), Blind Federation premises cleaning, KSRTC garage cleaning, Kilikolloor Railway station cleaning, and cleanliness drive at Ashramam grounds (one of the largest public gathering spots in the district). Various awareness programmes are conducted as part of this practice which includes awareness through magic shows, ‘My Waste My Responsibility’ initiative. Every year a local water body called ‘Pandarakkulam pond’ is cleaned by students in association with NSS and in 2018-19 the approach canal at Kottankara was also taken up. As part of this Aedes larval survey was also conducted and awareness classes were conducted for the local residents about dengue and malaria and their preventive measures. As a part of the awareness campaign, ‘Puzhanadatham’ (River Walk) at Kadapuzha, Kallada was organized and students participated with enthusiasm.
